The Map of Doom showing Florida and Texas going to Hell are misleading (intentionally). They show cases of corona virus, many of which are falsely attributed to the virus (flu, common colds, gunshot wounds, car crashes, etc.), and most of which are non-life-threatening. If the maps showed deaths, Florida and Texas would be seen as better off than California or New York. And Florida has the highest population of more vulnerable elderly people in the country.

I'm afraid I share your sense of despondency about the state of America. The anniversary of 9/11 feels to me like a commemoration of a nation which no longer exists. Our institutions are rotten and our managerial class is colossally incompetent and mendacious. I adore the United States, but I think we are likely past our peak.
