I am currently sitting in a cafe in Budapest, very much enjoying my trip here.
I will be publishing a Substack this weekend, and it will be something new: a Q & A with a reader. I regularly get the most interesting emails from my subscribers, many of them worthy of essays of their own. Lacking the time to do that, I am going to try this format, whereby I email some questions and the person emails me back their replies.
So keep an eye out for that this weekend. In the meantime, here are some of my holiday snaps.
Jenny, have a fab time! The weather is gorgeous at the moment in Hungary, a bit chilly but with sunshine and beautiful Autumn shades. That last picture (St. Stephen's Basilica) is very familiar. I was there just a few months ago, as my daughter had her graduation ceremony there. Amazing city! Enjoy the rest of the trip!
Oh, we stayed at Boscolo Budapest there in 2017. We enjoyed the city very much. I agree that the first photo is sobering given what is happening around the world.
The first picture is sobering as we continue to face what is going on in the world. The next four pictures are beautiful. I am always interested in reading about your adventures.
Oh! I love Budapest! If you are able, have dinner at SALT - above the Hotel Rum! The chef is amazing and the total meal is under 150US for a Michelin! I know it’s gauche to discuss price, but it was such a great experience and I am not money wealthy!
Damn, I'm only seeing this comment now, I would have definitely tried that place. We ate at Stand, which was more than 150 bucks but it was probably the best meal I've ever had in a restaurant. Also Hungarian wines are amazing.
Also of importance is that as you walk about the city, there are apartments that have a gold marker to identify where Jewish people lived who were taken from their homes in WWII. Interesting and timely, I think.
Yes, they do. I was looking out for them, though, and I only saw a few, which considering they deported like 450K from the city was weird. Having said that, by many accounts the city is now a very friendly place for Jews.
You take great pictures.
Thank you! I'm laden down with photographs, photo albums from the olden days, and now a vast photo library. It's too much!

Thank you -- back now but we had a lovely time. The spas were my favourite.
There is sadness, and beauty in the world. Thanks for sharing these pictures!
Yes, and there's definitely both in Budapest.

Make sure to try some Egri Bikavar!
Dammit another comment I missed until I got home. Next time!
Incredible. I'd read your travelogues from anywhere.
Enjoy!
That looks amazing! I'm looking forward to hear more about your adventures there. I've never been.
Cheers
