I’m trying out something new — a look back on the month that was, the best and worst of behaviour in the online chatter-sphere.
Do you all remember the grotesque Mr Creosote from Monty Python’s Meaning of Life? Well, that’s how spending too much time on X makes me feel. Too many hot takes, not enough discernment. And yet here I am, refreshing that timeline.
So Mrs Creosote Digests is me gorging on the Internet so you don’t have to. You’re welcome!
First thing’s first: I strongly recommend all my paid subscribers download the Notes app and start using the chat function. It would be a great way to create more of a community with each other, and with me! Plus it’s paid sub perk.
Juiciest Bait of the Month
Every few weeks a thing comes up on social media that causes a furore on anti-woke X. Somebody will get offended by something from their own side, and — bait well and truly taken — post a rant about it. Hot takes get very hot. Feelings get burned.
This is not to say that the original thing may not not have been deserving of criticism. It’s not criticism that is the problem. It’s more of a guilt-by-association phenomenon, mixed with conjecture, hyperbole and mind-reading.
I hate it. I want everyone to get along, k? So we can get back what’s important, like removing fisting from the high school curriculum. We’re in the middle of a psy war here, people. Can we save the bitching til after?
There were quite a few contenders this month. Anyone remember the cat eaters? But yesterday, James Lindsay beat them all with this hysterical tweet, in which he takes the biggest, fattest, juiciest, bait there is — from master provocateur Donald Trump. Trump posted a prayer to St. Michael, which — I repeat — is perfectly fine to criticise. But ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ was a *bit* of an over-reaction. I shall eat my words if this time next year the United States is a theocracy worshipping Christ, Lucifer and the Zoroastrian demon of chaos.
Ok, James.

Best Comment of the month
Ok, so this is a Notes post from July, not a comment from September. But it’s great, so I’m sharing it. If you aren’t already, DOWNLOAD THE NOTES APP. It’s turning into a fantastic social media site.
But let’s take some good news where we can find it!
Most read essay of the month
Looking back on my stats, it seems that when I write about Ireland, you guys really respond. This was my most read piece in September. Things move fast on the internet, and this particular abomination has receded into the ether, what with the pet-eating Haitians and what not.
Loved the Babylon Bee meme. Got a good belly laugh from that (and so did my husband). Also, that post from the mom talking about how anti-woke today's teens are made me VERY happy. I'm keeping fingers crossed that my grandkids (age 8 and 10) eventually join this wave of rebellion against the "woke." : )
"Michaelmas was not a thing, ever", well it was last Sunday at my church. And that's Anglican, so only Catholic-lite. Perhaps experiences are not always universal...but that does not a Hot X Take make, I suppose.
Anyway, I enjoyed this. It reaffirmed my decision to leave Twitter sone years ago and never to turn back. Good luck, Stay sane.
