Have you also noticed the grip that our increasingly unhinged and toxic media have on our culture? Our celebrities, leaders, and other beneficiaries of fame are so beyond the pale these days — and I think that’s the point. To demoralise and isolate us, the normal folk. To detach us from both our internal compass and our neighbour.
But if you look around you, you’ll find people who live normal, humble, fame-free lives, but who have done quite extraordinary things. Or who have a deep wisdom and real backbone. They are, in fact, everywhere! (Just not in any halls of power, unfortunately.)
Daniel Antopolsky is one of those unassuming talents, an old hippy and songwriter who was good friends with Townes Van Zandt back in the day. I spoke with him about his life, his travels, and how corrupted the music business was by drug abuse.
You should give him a listen on Spotify, this song in particular. And check out our talk below, it’s a needed antidote to today’s clickbait-and-rage insanity.
I'm glad that you have started doing interviews. A lot of people have interesting things to say. You are gifted both in writing and in conversation and I think that the interview format has a lot of potential.
Thank you Susan! I'm trying to branch out a bit, so it's nice to hear that it has potential. I feel far less comfortable in video/spoken format that I do when I just write, but that is a sign that I should keep going, I think.
I'm surprised a New York girl by way of Ireland would have ever heard of Towns Van Zandt.
Well I can't say I was ever a fan, but being a bit of a music magpie I had come across his name.
He was well known in Texas music circles. He wrote some hit songs for people like Willy Nelson.

Thank you for this interview and for introducing me to Daniel’s music. I am looking forward to taking a deeper dive.
