This weekend I turn 49 years old! (Shock. Horror. Confusion. Gratitude.)
It was one of life’s funny quirks that I was born on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, to two atheists. Now, as I careen toward 50, I find myself growing closer to the spirit of the day on which I made my entrance. 2024 was the year that I prayed the Rosary, almost every day. My grandfather would be so happy.

To celebrate not just my birthday, but the whole Advent season, and the turning of yet another year that we were all fortunate enough to experience together, I would like to offer subscription discounts — 20 percent off on the yearly plan! In return I offer on-line meet-ups, and that warm and fuzzy feeling of supporting work that you enjoy. Offer is valid until early January.
And thank you, as always, for saving culture with me.
Happy Birthday! I can't help wondering if your parents really rejected God by becoming atheists or if they rejected man-made religiosity and threw out the baby with the bathwater so to speak. I strongly suspect the latter. As far as the Catholic feast of the Immaculate Conception is concerned, I side with the Bible where Mary said, "My soul rejoices in God my Savior." (Luke 1:47). Mary was a wonderful woman, but she still needed a Savior as we all do. We can certainly celebrate the conception of this great saintly woman, but the only person without sin was Jesus Christ who was a person but who also was God Incarnate.
Happy Birthday, young'un. In the realm of "growing closer to the spirit" I found your substack when you posted about finding the Rosary. Yes, God bless you!
